Chronology
Fey became a cast member at the beginning of the 26th season (2000-01) when she and Jimmy Fallon were given the job of anchoring SNL's long-running news parody, Weekend Update (WU). Their chemistry together at the WU desk gained a sizable fanbase. Fey and Fallon worked together until the end of the 29th season (2003-04), when Fallon left the show. Fallon was replaced with Amy Poehler on Fey's recommendation, making this the first two-woman partnership in Updates history.

Between the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Fey gave birth to a daughter, went on maternity leave for the first two shows of the thirty-first season. For these two episodes, Poehler anchored alongside Horatio Sanz. Fey returned to the show on October 22, 2005, a mere six weeks after giving birth.

Departure
At the end of the thirty-first season, Fey left the show to work on a sitcom for NBC. The show, titled 30 Rock after the iconic Rockefeller Center building where SNL is taped, is loosely based on Fey's time on Saturday Night Live. Her seat at the Update desk was filled by Seth Meyers, who also took over as Head Writer for the thirty-second season.
