The Shins is an American rock band from Albuquerque, New Mexico formed in 1996 currently consisting of lead vocalist James Mercer (born December 26, 1970), lead drummer Joe Plummer, lead guitarist Jessica Dobson, lead bassist Yuuki Matthews and lead keyboardist Richard Swift (born March 16, 1977) and formerly consisted of Jesse Sandoval (1996-2009), Martin Crandall (born April 20, 1975; 1998-2009) and Dave Hernandez (born September 22, 1970; 1998-2000, 2003-2009). They appeared on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest twice. The first time was on January 13, 2007 where they performed "Phantom Limb" and "New Slang" and the second time was on March 10, 2012 where they performed "Simple Song" and "It's Only Life."
