Season 27 started on September 29, 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks. The first episode opened with a moving tribute featuring New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Paul Simon, and members of the New York City police and fire departments. As the show continued to entertain, four new cast members were hired and one would be re-hired midseason. This season was the final one for Will Ferrell.
