The season premiere of Season 12 and the 214th episode of Saturday Night Live. It premiered on October 11, 1986. It was hosted by actress Sigourney Weaver, star of Ghostbusters and the sequel Ghostbusters II and Avatar 2 with special guests Buster Poindexter and Christopher Durang. This was Sigourney Weaver's hosting debut on the show.
This is Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson and Kevin Nealon’s first episode as cast members. This was a cast overhaul for the show, as the only returning cast members from the previous season were Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller, Nora Dunn, and featured player/writer A. Whitney Brown.

- This was also Paul Miller's first episode as director.
- Al Franken was credited for the last episode of Season 11, and would return to the writing staff to make occasional uncredited appearances over the next two years, before being credited again during season 14 in 1988.
- This is the first episode of the third generation of SNL, with a whole new cast, who would all stay on the show for years to come, and who would all, slowly leave the show year by year.
- Lastly, starting with this episode, Cheryl Hardwick (one of the band's original members from 1975-1980), has officially rejoined the band is it's co-musical director alongside G.E. Smith, and Hardwick is reinstated as band pianiest, after having providing special musical material throughout the previous season.
