The 658th episode and the Season 34 finale of Saturday Night Live premiered on May 16, 2009, hosted by longtime former cast member Will Ferrell, star of the hit films Elf, Anchorman, Kicking & Screaming, Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Daddy's Home and the sequel Daddy's Home 2 and Spirited and the animated films Curious George and Megamind, with punk/rock band Green Day as the musical guest. This is Will Ferrell's 2nd hosting stint, and the 3rd musical guest appearance on SNL for Green Day.

This is the final episode for longtime cast member Darrell Hammond (who had been a cast member since 1995), as he left the show after 14 years. He was the longest-running cast member until 2017, with Kenan Thompson later surpassed his record as the longest-tenured cast member in the show's history. Additionally Casey Wilson, who had been a featured player since 2008 was let go after 1½ years. This is also the last episode for first-year featured player Michaela Watkins, as she was also let go after only one season.

The goodnights speech for Will Ferrell is "Thanks to Green Day! Tom Hanks! Norm MacDonald! Amy Poehler! Maya Reedolph — Rudolph! Reedolph? [he shrugs] Paul Rudd! Anne Hathaway! Artie Lange! Elisabeth Moss! [he wraps his arm around Darrell Hammond], This is Darrell Hammond, right here! [as the cast members begin to point out Hammond and hug him as the credits roll].

Title Image Description
Cheney On TV Cold Open Dick Cheney (Darrell Hammond) gets ready for an appearance on Meet the Press when George W. Bush (Will Ferrell) interrupts and talks about how he wishes Dick was more like Joe Biden, in the sense that he wanted Dick to "do stupid stuff to make me look smarter".
Opening Montage This is the final episode to use the seasons 32-34 opening, and Darrell Hammond, Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins' final time being credited as cast members.
Will Ferrell Monologue Longtime former cast member Will Ferrell returns to SNL to host for his second time. He discusses how he was initially a dramatic and not a comedic actor. He shows the audience the last scene of a play he wrote called "The Wishful Dreams of Danny O'Neill".
Wade Blasingame Defense Lawyer Will Ferrell plays Wade Blasingame, an Attorney Lawyer to defend people against dogs. There are many videos of a man mimicking the acts of a dog and Wade finds it disgusting. There are many cameos in this, such as Chris Parnell as the man mimicking a dog and Wade's brother Doug, Maya Rudolph plays an angry home owner as Chris Parnell's character digs up a whole in her yard, Rachel Dratch where her character gets attacked by Parnell's character, Tracy Morgan who plays a man who used Wade as a lawyer, and Horatio Sanz as a home owner who notices Parnell's character pooping in his backyard.
Dooneese Fred Armisen plays Lawerence Welk of the Lawrence Welk Show on PBS for the second time. The premise of the show is Will Ferrell's character, Ted Nathers, is singing and standing next to a streetlamp, and the Maharelle sisters, played by Abby Elliott, Michaela Watkins, Casey Wilson, and Kristen Wiig as Dooneese. As usual, Dooneese makes the guest uncomfortable.
Celebrity Jeopardy Will Ferrell reprises as one of Ferrell's most infamous characters, Alec Trebek. The guests on this episode are Kathie Lee Gifford (Kristen Wiig), Tom Hanks as himself, and the most famous guest to SNL Celebrity Jeopardy Sean Connery (Darrell Hammond). Tom Hanks suddenly forgets the hit movie "Castaway" was a thing. Connery as always says a category name incorrectly. This time instead of "Catch These Men" he says "Catch the Semen" which Sean wonders if it is the purpose of Trebek's mustache. There is a special appearance in this sketch where Burt Reynolds, played by Norm Macdonald, returns for one question and then vanishes.
Green Day performed "Know Your Enemy".   While introducing Green Day's first performance, Will Ferrell wore a Ricky Martin T-shirt.
Weekend Update with Seth Meyers For the season finale, Amy Poehler makes a surprise appearance to reunite the duo after Amy left SNL 5 months earlier. The return of an old segment by the duo, Really?! with Seth and Amy, happened because Arizona State decided to not give President Obama and honorary degree. The special guest on Weekend Update is the ghost of Harry Carey (Will Ferrell) as he discusses how wonderful being dead is.
Funeral This sketch stars Jason Sudeikis as a Pastor for a funeral. There are a repeated number of people wanting to give final words. First, Bill Hader's character was gifted the watch of the deceased, but the watch is nowhere to be found. He requested that it be placed in an UGG boot on the casket so there will be no trouble. Will Ferrell's character, Graham Yost, requests to say some final words where instead he invites everyone to go to a comedy club to watch him perform and he announces all the dates he is performing. Kristen Wiig's character then enters as an old lady with an oxygen tank and starts talking about a large rodent she hears under her floorboards. Fred Armisen's character then starts to brag about how he was able to get a blonde (played by Michaela Watkins) and says that he will be making out with her after his speech. Will Forte's character enters and reminisces about the amount of death he has seen in the past year. He then reveals that he is the one that took the watch Bill Hader's character was looking for. Bobby Moynihan's character enters and yells "What!!!" and does a mic drop and exits. A cameo by Maya Rudolph is in the sketch where her character says she has no idea who the deceased is, but she knows that "sasquatches are real". She then sings a rendition of Amazing Grace but instead the title is "Amazing Sasquatch". Will Ferrell's character returns and tells people about the tragic news that one of his show dates was canceled, but he was able to add shows in September.
Green Day performed "21 Guns"
Goodnight Saigon Four middle-aged men sit eating and drinking in the dining lounge in Grand Central Station and discuss their plans for the summer. One of them - Fritz - chimes in with banal jokes. When Ray mentions his plan to visit Vietnam, Fritz goes into a trance-like state. He steps away from the table to a group of nearby musicians, and they begin to play and sing the Billy Joel song "Goodnight Saigon". Fritz's friends comment on his odd behavior. Fritz moves back and forth from the table to the musicians several times, and the number of band members increases each time. By the final chorus, there are more than 20 people playing and singing. As the song ends, they march off, with Fritz at the back of the line. His friends then realize that he has left without paying, and that this is not the first time he has done this. This marked the final SNL sketch appearances of Darrell Hammond, Casey Wilson, and Michaela Watkins as cast members.|Four middle-aged men sit eating and drinking in the dining lounge in Grand Central Station and discuss their plans for the summer. Trivia[]

  • This episode premiered the same night as the series finale of its rival sketch comedy show Madtv. Coincidentally, Artie Lange cameoed on that episode in the "Goodnight Saigon" sketch.
  • This was also the final episode for longtime writer Paula Pell as she (who had been a writer since 1995; and was renamed writing supervisor at the start of the season), briefly left the show after 14 years as a writer (and five accumulative years as a writing supervisor).
