Carlin was noted for his black comedy and his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven dirty words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5-4 decision affirmed the government's power the regulate indecent material on the public airwaves. He hosted Saturday Night Live on October 11, 1975 and November 10, 1984.

He was also impersonated by Fred Armisen on the March 12, 2005 episode during the "Sean Penn's Celebrity Roast" sketch and on the May 13, 2006 during the "Charades" sketch.
