The season premiere of Season 42 and the 809th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 1, 2016. It was hosted by the Australian actress Margot Robbie, star of the hit films The Legend of Tarzan, Focus, Suicide Squad, I, Tonya, Terminal, Goodbye Christopher Robin, Mary Queen of Scots, Peter Rabbit and the sequel Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bombshell, Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Babylon, and Barbie, with Candian singer The Weeknd as the musical guest, who performed "Starboy" and "False Alarm" and made an onscreen appearance on Weekend Update, in a bit titled "The Weeknd Update". This will be Margot Robbie's hosting debut. This is also The Weeknd's 2nd musical guest appearance, and his 3rd appearance on SNL.
This is the first episode with Mikey Day, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor as cast members, and the first episode for Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump.
