No new cast members joined at the start of the season; Nasim Pedrad was upgraded to repertory status. This is the final season for Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and Abby Elliott as cast members. Paul Brittain left the show abruptly mid-season; his final episode was January 21. Kate McKinnon joined the show as his replacement; her first episode was April 7.

- Alec Baldwin, who hosted the September 24, 2011 episode and the season premiere, attains the record of most frequent host which was formerly shared with him and Steve Martin, with sixteen times hosting. That episode was also Baldwin's first time hosting a season premiere, and has joined Martin in becoming one of two men to host a season premiere, a Christmas episode and a season finale.
- With this season Seth Meyers surpasses Tina Fey as the longest serving Weekend Update anchor, though she remains the longest serving female Update anchor.
